There are 12 main channels and 2 extraordinary channels in the body of which enable
the flow of Qi and blood to the entire body. The channels are named after organs but are more closely related to a set of
functions in the body. Each channel and organ system has its own specific functions which it must maintain to be healthy.
Acupuncture is used along these channels to address the specific system that is not in balance. The acu-point is stimulated
through needling to strengthen deficient conditions or disperse excessive conditions. Acupuncture can treat many common conditions due to its ability to affect the whole body through this channel system.
Acupuncture
in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, blockages
of Qi and blood in certain channels lead to the pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions. These blockages are
released when acupuncture is applied to the affected channels. Very fine, sterile and disposable needles are inserted
into the skin where the body is stimulated to release the bockages thus reduce or eliminate pain.
Additionally,
the use of moxibustion is often used where a warming herb is applied to the area to further increase circulation. Electro
acupuncture may also be used to treat musculoskeletal conditions. A mild electrical current is sent through the blocked channel
thus relieving pain. The combination of acupuncture and moxibustion or electro-acupuncture is the the mainstay of treating
musculoskeletal conditions with Traditional Chinese Medicine. This gentle, safe and effective approach offers relief
to many patients with common pain conditions.
